8 Things I Saw on the Street Style Set in NYC That Are Suddenly in My Cart

One of the most exciting times of the year in fashion? When the runway shows pick up again. Not only do designers debut their new collections, but the shows also draw the best dressed celebrities, editors, buyers, and influencers, who bring their coolest looks to the street style scene. At New York Fashion Week, I saw a fresh set of looks and trends emerge that will help define what people will wear in the coming months.

So what are the noteworthy street style trends worth shopping now? Insiders wore some of the biggest trends of the season—from edgy leather skirts and flight jackets to ballerina flats and maxi hemlines—in that cool, easy way we always see style unfold on the streets of New York. Ahead, shop the eight major trends I spotted while I was at fashion week that I can't wait to test-drive myself.

Edgy Leather Pieces

Style is getting grittier and edgier for fall. One way I'm seeing this play out is in the leather pieces emerging for the new season, including distressed leather jackets, biker-inspired skirts with exposed silver zippers, and grommet belts.

Denim Midi Skirts

Denim always has a major moment on the NYFW street style scene. One way we're seeing that play out for fall? Denim midi skirts. The shape feels fresh and very versatile for transitional dressing. Style the piece now with a strapless top and heels, then swap in knee-high boots and a sweater for the coming months.

There is no denying the return of flight jackets for fall, and Laura Harrier just debuted the cool, low-key way to wear them for fall. Simply add a white tank top, slouchy low-rise jeans, and a classic leather belt.

Maxi Lengths

We've been discussing maxi hemlines for months and months, and Kendall Jenner has confirmed that the trend will be huge this fall. While I predict we'll be seeing floor-sweeping lengths in every form, dresses are a very wearable place to start if you're easing your way into the silhouette.

Layered Denim

As mentioned above, there is always a lot of great denim in NYC. Aside from midi skirts, we're seeing fashion insiders play with layering. From denim shirts with matching jeans to shackets paired with skirts, there are so many cool ways to style denim-on-denim looks.

Slouchy trousers are the trend that keeps getting refined and styled in new ways season after season. If you add one tailored piece to your closet for fall, make it a pair of pleated black trousers with a relaxed fit.

Colorful Bags

Steering away from neutrals, I'm seeing more colorful bags on the street style scene. From Prada's airbrushed Supernova bag carried by Who What Wear editor Eliza Huber to suede slouchy bags, this trend was particularly noteworthy in the accessory space.

Ballet Flats

Another accessory trend that was everywhere at NYFW? Ballet flats. Just one of the pretty trends that are set to be popular for fall, this is the one that had the strongest presence in NYC to kick off the month of street style trends.
